Opinion: Good business by the first deadline, but still work to do for Sheffield United

So that was a quiet one yesterday wasn’t it?

I suppose given the way we’ve gone about our business so far this window and who we are looking to bring in this was never going to be our real deadline day, that comes with the ‘domestic window’ deadline a week on Friday.

But I think it’s as good a time as any to assess what we have done so far. If you’re a golf fan, let’s consider this an analysis of our front nine, before we turn around and play the back nine.

Best bit of business: Those who have been following me ever since the story started back in July will know where I’m going with this, it’s Rhian Brewster. Given how badly our forwards performed last season with a top scorer on six in the league, getting in a new face was always going to be one of the main areas to improve on, and I really think we’ve got one in Brewster, who’s even got the backing from former Premier League forward Darren Bent as well.

Will we bring in a new centre-back before the window closes?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Worst bit of business: I don’t think there have been any standout ‘clangers’ from the Blades this summer. You might argue that our failure to hold on to Dean Henderson was bad, but I think the majority of that was out of our hands, so you can’t really blame us. And whilst I’ve had my doubts over Oli Burke, I’m not branding the whole thing as a disaster just yet.

Overall grade: B+) The only real downside is that we weren’t able to get a replacement in for Jack O’Connell, but as I hinted at earlier, I think that’s something that will happen before the latter deadline, and because it happened so late in the window, it would be unfair to totally hold that against the club.

What about you? What do you make of our window at this stage?

These are purely my thoughts, McBurnie the biggest waste of money ever, he will never be a prem footballer. B erge, far too slow and gives the ball away too easily. Fleck dosnt want to be here anymore, used to be the king pin but avoids the ball as much as he can. Ramsdale dives after the ball has past him, not good enough. Burke, without support he never touched the ball just runs about. Lundstram, never liked him, too slow too predictable, not a good midfield player. Collectively we are awful, start too slow, can’t keep the ball, can’t score and why on earth have we changed the system?

Clearly there isn’t anything about sheff utd that you do like so I’m guessing you follow someone else. The players you happily slag off are the same players who finished 9th last season. There is something in football called form – currently a few players are out if it including Stevens, fleck and lundstram, but that will change. Ramsdale has promise which is why he is an England u21. Mcburnie does his job, and as every commentator says can be a real handful, but he needs someone playing close to him. Burke has shown a lot of promise and berge has been standout. Fine margins in football. Decisions that went our way last season haven’t this. While we lose by the odd goal at arsenal man City shop 5 – man utd 6 and Liverpool 7. Love to know how useless all there players are in your opinion. I have absolutely no doubt it will turn around.

I agree with a lot you say Phil. McBernie a complete waste of space. trots around as if he’s playing the playground. Bone idle. Berge has got a lot to prove yet. There’s no cutting edge to him. No killer balls, no shots, not enough challenges. Fleck didn’t seem to be interested the other day, but let’s hope that was just a one-off. Unless Wilder changes things Brewster will not get the chances to score. What was the point of bringing in Robinson if he thinks he’s not good enough. He can’t keep turning water into wine. It’s quality we need not quantity.
