Well, we’re one step closer to adding that all-important squad depth that I’ve been talking about.

And with the amount of money that’s being reported, I genuinely believe that this could be one of the biggest bargains of the upcoming transfer window.

According to a report from Berkshire Live, Sheffield United are in the process of completing a move for 25-year-old Reading midfielder John Swift, with the initial fee set to be as little as £3.5m.

The former Chelsea academy man has contributed a combined 52 goals and assists during his six seasons in the Championship across his three clubs Reading, Brentford and Rotherham United and now looks set to make the step up a division and get a crack at the Premier League.

I said a few weeks ago when he was first linked with us that I felt he had outgrown the Championship with his levels of production and now it looks as if he’s going to finally be given a chance to shine, and at £3.5m, this is really going to be a case of low risk with a potential for high reward.

Would Swift be a good signing for us?

No

No

He might not make a breakthrough into the first-team straight away, with Blades boss Chris Wilder pretty much having his first-choice central midfield settled, but if Ben Osborn has showed anything with his recent displays, then if the opportunity comes through injury or suspension, then it’s not impossible to think he could be part of the team for a while yet.

And even if he is just a backup/rotation option, with his numbers coming in, I don’t think it’s going to be too big a step back in terms of quality from the first-team to the ‘reserves’, so we shouldn’t have to worry about a repeat of a result like Sunderland in the cup if we go for a ‘weakened’ team.

What about you? What do you make of this move for Swift?
