Looks like we’re going to be searching a lot closer to home when it comes to our transfer market spending.

With a recent report suggesting that we aren’t willing to spend as high as €20m for the services of Olympiacos’ Mady Camara, another story claims that we could be looking for a much cheaper option going forward.

According to a report from Football Insider, Sheffield United have entered the race to bring in Reading’s central midfielder John Swift, submitting a bid of more than £3m, although they face a challenge from current Championship side Leeds United to try and bring him in.

Swift, a product of the Chelsea academy, spent years on loan at clubs like Rotherham, Brentford and Swindon before finally settling in Berkshire. A box-to-box midfielder by nature, he’s adept at both scoring and providing goals, with 26 goals and 25 assists and counting in the Championship over the past six seasons.

Would Swift be a good signing for us?

Yes

No

No

Numbers that show he’s probably outgrown the division, and it’s time for him to make the step up sooner rather than later, and Sheffield United in my mind would be a pretty good fit for him.

I hinted earlier today about the idea of the Blades getting rid of John Lundstram, another box-to-box midfielder, if they don’t resolve his contract issues, and it could very well be a case of one man in, one man out if push comes to shove. Not that I want it to, Lundstram’s been very effective for us over the years, but it’s nice to look at the options out there just in case.

Plus, if he doesn’t work out, it’s not as if we’d have spent an absolute fortune on him.

What about you? Would you want us to sign Swift?
