Pushing things right to the limit in terms of our budget.

That appears to be how things are developing when it comes to Sheffield United’s summer transfer window.

According to a report from Sky Sports, Championship side Brentford are looking for £25m in order to split from one of their main men from this past season Ollie Watkins, a price that could ‘dissuade’ the Blades from making a move.

I’ve spoken before about this deal, back when the fee was reported to be £18m and in there I said that it wouldn’t be too different to the deal that brought Oli McBurnie to the club last summer, both in terms of the fee and what he can bring to the side.

Should the Blades make a move for Ollie Watkins this summer?

No

Now the question becomes whether or not the extra £7m (that’s a minimum at this stage, with a number of clubs interested it could become a bidding war) be worth bringing him on board and helping us out? I’ve touched on our lack of goals this past season, just over a goal a game, and how that desperately needs to be increased if we are to avoid floundering next season.

Given how much is at stake financially for staying in the division, £25m for the goals needed to keep us up would look like an absolute steal, and given how much Chris Wilder likes to rotate the forwards, he’ll certainly be given the opportunity to showcase himself, and hopefully that provides us with the return that we need.

What about you? Do you think that the Blades should ‘break the bank’ as it were to bring in Watkins? And how much would you set as the ‘limit’ for how much we should spend on a new forward (if at all) this summer?
