Opinion: Billy Sharp’s praise masking a fundamental error with Sheffield United’s season

I’m not entirely sure this is sending the right message.

David McGoldrick finally got off the mark for the season on Tuesday night as he broke the deadlock against Reading inside the opening five minutes.

And whilst a forward going until March to get his first goal of the season might be cause for concern, that doesn’t seem to be the case for one member of the Blades playing squad.

Speaking after Sheffield United’s victory over Reading in the F.A Cup, captain Billy Sharp commented on McGoldrick’s fortunes in front of goal this season, or rather lack of it, and about his overall style of play at the same time:

“I hope it wasn’t playing on his mind because he’s experienced enough and he’s contributed enough in games. He probably should have had a couple of goals, he knows that, but he’s had assists, he’s playing well. All he’s not done this season is score goals. He’s put his performances in this season and he’s been unlucky at times.”

Will David McGoldrick reach five goals by the end of the year?

Yes

Yes

No

No

This kind of touches on the point that I was talking about yesterday, that forwards need to start upping their game in the latter stages of the season, and then hopefully into next campaign. Despite being 8th in the table, Sheffield United rank 15th in the Premier League when it comes to goals scored, and we can’t be happy with that going into 2020/21, because we’re playing a very dangerous game.

We’ve been bailed out this season by our defence, and whilst it would be nice to see that continue into next season, the threat of second season syndrome will always be prevalent and once teams work out a way to break us down, we’re going to need the forwards to pick up the slack a little bit more. This isn’t just a point about McGoldrick, you can drag it out to the rest of the squad as well, a squad that’s top scorers have only got five goals this season, and one of them is midfielder John Fleck.

So maybe cool it down on the praise Sharp until he can do the job he’s paid for, which is put the ball in the back of the net.

Cool it down on the praise?? What do you want him to do, slag his own teammate off who’s played so well throughout the majority of the season?

What a ridiculous statement to make. Fair enough pen an article on an opinion of not scoring enough goals but don’t try telling players what they can can’t say.

I will repeat my comments on a different article which you have subsequently deleted in which I called you out.

You are not a journalist. I believe you are a fan who for some reason has been given a platform on here to peddle complete shite.

Who the fuck are you to tell Billy Sharp to cool it down on the praise?

How the fuck do you know what David McGoldrick is paid to do? Someone who has been outstanding this season, regardless of his goal scoring record. He has contributed massively to the success of a team pushing for Europe that were widely tipped for relegation on a championship budget.

Did you know that Firmino at Liverpool hasn’t scored for 18 games and counting at Anfield but still plays every week In the best team in the world. Why, because of what he contributes to the team, you absolute plum.

    You are a fraud.

    Show some fucking respect.
