“We have faith”- Chris Wilder gives show of support to struggling member of the Blades team

At least someone has got some faith in him.

Let’s just hope that the faith is well placed and we can actually see some tangible results by the end of the season.

Having finally broken his duck for the season on Tuesday night against Reading, Blades forward David McGoldrick has come in for some praise for his efforts throughout the campaign. First from his fellow forward and club captain Billy Sharp, and now from his boss Chris Wilder.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of Saturday’s game with Norwich City, Wilder mentioned that McGoldrick isn’t necessarily in the team for the goals that he scores, but for the other things that he brings to the team:

“I kept picking him for what he was bringing to the team on and off the ball, his performances have been exceptional. We have faith in Didzy, the players do, the staff do, and so do the fans”

My thing though, and this is something that I hinted at earlier today, is that I don’t want my forwards to be in the team for what they do off the ball, I want them to score goals, and the fact is that he, and to an extent the rest of the squad haven’t done that enough this season.

Will David McGoldrick reach five goals by the end of the year?

Perhaps I’m old fashioned in this sense, but I want my forwards to score goals first and foremost. If they can add something to their game on top of that, all well and good, but the priority has to be putting the ball in the back of the net.

So hopefully this goal that he scored on Tuesday night is going to be the first of many, because if it isn’t then you really will have to question if it’s worth us keeping hold of him going into next season, because as I’ve said before, we’re playing a dangerous game with our lack of goals, and that needs to be eradicated sooner rather than later.

Or it could cause us some problems going into next year.
