“There is a limit”: Wilder’s comments on contracts could cause the Blades problems in the future

|

Looks like Sheffield United are playing hardball on the matter.

On one hand it’s a pretty good show of strength that the club aren’t willing to back down, but it could cause them a few problems further down the road if they aren’t’ careful.

The club were rather busy during the break, as players such as David McGoldrick, Oliver Norwood, Billy Sharp and Enda Stevens all signed new deals at the club, although there are still some that need to be sorted out.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s game with Aston Villa (boy it feels good to know there’s a game this close for the first time in a while), Blades boss Chris Wilder spoke about the contract situation at the club:

“We left the offers out there and we’re in the negotiation phase. I’ve mentioned a lot of times that I have a responsibility to the football club. Yes, the players want the best deals for them and that’s understandable. But there is a limit to how far we’ll go and we’ll leave those offers out there.”

Whilst he may be talking about the players that have got deals in front of them, I do think though that his words could cause a problem in the future.

If he’s mentioning limits to what the club is going to pay, then that could seriously hurt us in the transfer market. Take the example of Emmanuel Dennis, who we are reportedly OK with paying €25m for this summer in the transfer fee. If the club are so open about saying how rigid they are with their wage offers and structure, it might put some players off coming to us if they know they aren’t going to get a bumper pay packet.

Whilst Wilder says he has to do right by the football club, surely at some stage we have to be in a position to splash out a little bit more in order to get the players we want. Whether they be on our roster already, or ones that we are hoping will join us.

What about you? Do you agree with Wilder’s comments surrounding the wage situation at the club?

    There’s no agree or disagree

We won’t be buying superstars outside our budget anyway, but we have to pay what is a good Premier League wage.
Losing players to Liverpool, Man Utd etc cant be helped, but losing players to Southampton, Palace, Brighton, Watford because they will pay more than us would spell disaster
