Well, this would certainly put a spanner in the works wouldn’t it?

Just when you think everything is set to be completed, someone comes in and swipes it away at the last minute.

According to a report from The Reading Chronicle, Aston Villa have made a last-ditch attempt to try and pry Royals midfielder away from us. There were recent reports suggesting that the Blades were ‘set to finalise’ a £3.5m deal for the midfielder, has contributed a combined 52 goals and assists during his six seasons in the Championship across his three clubs Reading, Brentford and Rotherham United.

Now it looks like Dean Smith’s men want to make him part of their plans for next season, even though they find themselves teetering between the two divisions right now.

And I think that’s something that will play a major part in this deal, is whether or not both clubs that are reportedly after him are in the same division, because the prospect of playing in the Premier League is far more enticing than having another season in the Championship.

Would Swift be a good signing for us?

Yes

Yes

No

No

So if you’re one of the (at time of writing) 74% of Sheffield United fans that want us to bring in Swift this summer then you better start praying that Aston Villa don’t avoid the drop on Sunday afternoon, or we might just find ourselves letting a very talented player slip through our fingers.

And having spoken yesterday about the idea of Swift being a good ‘cheap’ option to offset some of our lost revenue from not qualifying for Europe, I certainly don’t want to see that happen.

What about you? What do you make of this news about Villa swooping in for Swift?
