It’s not that he has some big shoes to fill, it’s that he’s got some big gloves to fill (so the analogy still works).

Writing in a piece for The Star, journalist Danny Hall talked about the impending transfer of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Bournemouth, and how he has got a big takes on his hands when it comes to replacing Dean Henderson, one of the best goalkeepers in the country, and someone who is tipped to be the number one for England someday.

It’s a rather long article that’s filled with statistics, and as usual I could never do it justice by trying to whittle it down into a paragraph, so I urge you to read it yourself. But he concluded that it was better for the Blades to make this move now and secure the goalkeeper position for a number of years, rather than potentially pay Manchester United a reported £6m Henderson for another season and then be in the same boat again, something I hinted at a few months ago.

In the end though, he concluded that Ramsdale could very well be the one to take the mantle of our number one after two years of Henderson in goal at Bramall Lane.

Who would you rather have in goal next season?

Whilst I haven’t been in favour of bringing in Ramsdale, I’d rather we’d have brought in Uğurcan Cakir ahead of him, and even Henderson ahead of Cakir, I do think that Ramsdale needs to be given the opportunity to carve out his own career at the club if and when the move does come through, and put faith in Chris Wilder that he has got this one right.

I just hope that we don’t spend all of next year pointing out that ‘Henderson would have done better’ or ‘Cakir would have saved that’.

Let’s just move on from Henderson and start a new ‘era’ as it were at Bramall Lane.
