Jamie Ward has been called up to the Northern Ireland squad for the qualifiers against Poland and Slovakia.

Ward has been in fine form since his delayed start to the season, scoring two goals in his first three games, including a fine strike in Saturday’s victory over Reading.

Ward has operated on the wing for the Blades so far this season and could be looking to secure a similar place in the national side, with competition up front coming from David Healy, Kyle Lafferty, Martin Patterson and Andrew Little.

The 23 year old was previously an unused substitute in two World Cup qualifiers, but will be looking to play a bigger part as Nigel Worthington’s men look to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa next year.
