Chris Wilder will return to the Bramall Lane dugout following his re-appointment yesterday as the Blades host 2020 Premier League winners Liverpool!

Chris Wilder returned to Bramall Lane, taking up the managerial post yesterday following Paul Heckingbottom’s dismissal. The former Blades boss will have a difficult task in hand as he attempts stave bottom of the league Blades from relegation.

They come into this fixture following a humiliating 5-0 loss at Burnley last Saturday. They also saw striker Oli McBurnie dismissed for two bookable offences. Following his sending off at Tottenham earlier in the season, the former Barnsley striker will serve a two-match suspension, ruling him out of next weekend’s fixture at home to Brentford and will likely be made available for the following weekend’s trip to Chelsea.

The last time that these two sides met was on 28th February 2021 at Bramall Lane. With lockdown still in force, there were no spectators to witness this fixture which ended in a 2-0 victory to the Reds following second-half goals from Curtis Jones on 48 minutes and a Kean Bryan own goal on 65 minutes. The last time the Blades were victorious over Liverpool in the league came in September 1992 from Adrian Littlejohn’s goal after five minutes.

Jurgan Klopp’s side are currently second in the Premier League table behind leaders Arsenal and could go top if the Gunners failed to beat Luton Town last night.

The Reds come into the fixture having dramatically beaten Fulham 4-3 at Anfield on Sunday. With three minutes remaining, the hosts were losing 3-2 before goals from Wataru Endo and Trent Alexander-Arnold secured maximum points – his free-kick smashed against the crossbar before hitting keeper Bernd Leno and landing into the net.

Liverpool are currently seven league matches unbeaten. The last defeat they suffered in the Premier League came on 30th September as Liverpool saw two players dismissed as Tottenham Hotspur won 2-1.
