Looking towards the future, possibly by taking inspiration from the past?

That seemed to be the message that Blades boss Chris Wilder wanted to get across when discussing our movements in the transfer window.

Speaking about the transfer window so far (via @The_Bladesman), Wilder mentioned the player’s ages and gave a clear indication that the deals the club are making this window aren’t just for the here and now, but are very much looking towards the future:

“I’m delighted with the acquisitions this window. You look at the age of the players that we’ve got, the potential, what we’ve got for value for money. With Oli, 2 boys from Derby, Rammers, I’m delighted.”

Which I think is incredibly smart planning. It might seem obvious to have to say it, but there are some teams who have on occasion sought to go ‘all out’ for the current season without much thought for what will happen in the future. The best and most recent example being Fulham a couple of seasons ago, with Aston Villa very nearly following them.

The Blades will finish ______ than last season?

Higher

Higher

Lower

Whilst some people might think that we are going to be relatively safe this season, should the unthinkable happen, then we have got a team around us that can stay together for the next five or six years minimum, similar to how a number of players have stuck with us as we were going through the divisions the past half a decade or so.

And being so young, it means that the resale value, should we be forced to go down that road as well will more than likely play in our favour. Either way, we look to be sitting pretty comfortable with the players we’re bringing in.
