Sheffield United have confirmed the signing of James Harper on a permanent contract until the end of the season.

The player, who was previously on loan from Championship rivals Reading, was deemed surplus to requirements at the Madejski and was used as part of the Brian Howard deal which saw the former Barnsley man go the other way.

After a slow start, Harper has stood out in recent games, and manager Kevin Blackwell believes it can be a positive signing for the entire squad.

‘He has started to really develop now and some of the Reading people the other night thought that he was looking like the Harper of old.

‘He is getting on the ball and is an infectious character but he can play, and I think that Reading missed having someone like him the other night.’

You need someone funny in the dressing-room for the atmosphere, and it endears him to the other players.’
