Sheffield United have signed Estonian goalkeeper Mikhel Astalu on a two and a half year deal from European giants FC Flora Tallinn.

Aksalu, who has amassed over five caps for his nation jumped at the chance to move to South Yorkshire when he heard Kevin Blackwell was interested.

‘This move is like a dream come true because I am now the second Estonian goalkeeper to play in England.

‘It was tough going through the trial, but I managed to impress and the club have decided they wanted me permanently.

‘I have played my football in Estonia for the last seven years and for the last three years or so I have been first-choice for Flora Tallinn.

Aksalu will fill the gap left by Maltese international Justin Haber who has been quietly ushered east to Hungary where he’s played a vital role this season (in determining the destination for the side’s winter break).

However, if you thought this signing wasn’t a positive move by the Blades boss, think again. It turns out the shot-stopper will use his superior intelligence to keep out the goals from the other teams (if he makes it past the reserves).

‘I know enough about the Championship to play at this level.’

I know enough about Manchester United, but I doubt Sir Alex is going to start me in the holding role alongside Michael Carrick and the 2006 junior Mastermind champion who lives down my street.

Here’s to our new signing, and let’s hope he proves me wrong.
