After a successful return to first-team football at the weekend Gary Naysmith has stated that he would like to stay at Bramall Lane beyond his current deal.

Naysmith, signed by Bryan Robson following the Blades relegation in 2007, is out of contract this Summer, but has reiterated his desire to continue as a Blades player.

However, standing in the way of a new deal at the moment, is the full-back’s salary, especially with the recent need for cost-cutting.

Hopefully I’ll still be here.

‘The fans have been great to me and I appreciate the club standing by me for such a long time. This is a special place. I realise that I came here on Premiership wages and I’m experienced enough to know that cuts have got to be made at the moment.

‘But that doesn’t mean that we can’t come to an arrangement. ‘It’s about finding a happy medium.’

His future may be undecided at the moment, but many Blades fans would be grateful to see the former Everton man continue at the Lane, following some indifferent displays by Andy Taylor, Jordan Stewart and Toni Kallio in his place this campaign.

Some would see the sensible option to retain Naysmith as first choice, with Taylor his immediate understudy following his £400,000 transfer from Tranmere Rovers last season.
