Debate: Why Points Per Game might not be the best solution to fix a curtailed season

|

Given that we are kind of important in this whole scenario, we should probably tread carefully.

Otherwise people might accuse us of having a vested interest (which we do given our league position), and that’s dictating our opinion on the whole matter, but I still think it’s important to have the debate.

ESPN put together a list of all the possible scenarios that could potentially be brought in to try and fix the season should things not go plan and the season does have to be curtailed rather than allowing the season to finish, many of them surrounding various ‘Points Per Game’ (PPG) scenarios.

Now there are a number of options, each with their pros and cons, and it’d take too long for me to run through them all here, so I implore you to read the article yourself before making your mind up, what I will say though, is that Sheffield United would finish no lower than 7th in any of the scenarios, so we would get some form of European football out of it.

Is some form of PPG a fair way to decide the end to the season?

Yes

Yes

No

No

In my mind, I think that the season should be played out. Using factors like points per game doesn’t take into account the randomness and intangibles in football, such as goal difference. In a points per game world, Leicester City’s 9-0 win over Southampton counts exactly the same as a 1-0 victory over them would, and given how important goal difference can be in some matters, to completely disregard that aspect of the game just wouldn’t sit right with me.

However, I’d really like to know what you guys all think about all the ideas surrounding PPG, do you think that there is a ‘right’ or a ‘wrong’ way for the season to be cancelled and for places to be awarded under one of the proposed ideas?

Or do you think it would just be better if we just let the season play out as normal, no matter how long it takes.

Points per game should be based both home and away. This would be give teams their average points won for remaining fixtures at home or away. Add the two figures together and devide by 2 would give more accurate figure and remove the argument of teams having more fixtures at home than others.
