Nigel Clough has confirmed to BBC Sport that Diego De Girolamo will be leaving Sheffield United at the end of the season.

It was officially confirmed that, reported Arsenal, Juventus and Sunderland target, De Girolamo had rejected a contract last month – with contract talks breaking down he’ll be leaving Bramall Lane when his contract expires.

The offer made to him was one that Clough feels was ‘a good deal’ but he would prefer to look elsewhere.

‘His time here will come to an end when his contract ends. He’s rejected his contract offer and the chance to stay here.

‘We felt we had offered him a good deal but I think he feels he will get better opportunities elsewhere.’

Since these contract talks broke down the Italian U20 international hasn’t been involved, with the striker left out of the last three squads but Clough insist that this omission is simply because Matt Done had arrived and done so well, well enough to keep out Marc McNulty who ‘is a better player than Diego and he can’t get on at the moment’ either.

It’s a disappointment to lose the Italian but we’ll still get compensation wherever he does end up due to him being under the age of 24….
