Could this former Premier League manager replace Heckingbottom?

Sheffield United have found their sixth Premier League season a difficult task. After fourteen matches played, the Blades have returned to the bottom of the table following an unacceptable 5-0 loss at Burnley yesterday. With pressure mounting, has Paul Heckingbottom managed his last game for United?

Despite poor results, the Blades played some good football in the early stages of the season and found themselves narrowly beaten at home to both Manchester City and Manchester United, with both games finishing 2-1 in favour of the opposition.

However, they have accumulated five points thus far this season following a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on 4th November as well as earning draws against Everton, and Brighton & Hove Albion!

Performances of late have been poor and the commitment of the team and its players have been questionable. United would love to be a Premier League club for the following 2024/25 season. To do this they need to finish strong and earn more points than the bottom three. At this point of the season, as negative as it sounds, the Blades season could be over before the next transfer window opens.

Whether this means a new manager is in place will remain to be seen, but names have been circulated on social media as to his successor should Sheffield United be in a position to be hunting for a new manager.

Former Real Madrid and Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Julian Lopetgui has been nominated as Heckingbottom’s successor. He left Molineux on 8th August after a season in charge of the Midlands club, having guided them to thirteenth in the league.

Whether he will be the next manager in the Bramall Lane dugout – only time will tell, but what do you think? Should Paul Heckingbottom leave and who do you see as the next manager? Put your comments below…

Postman Pat might improve on delivery. Seriously though Neil Warnock is the obvious firefighter and he is a committed Blade. What a way to bow out as a manager !

  • Peter Smith says:

Warnock, Warnock. Blades nothing to lose ,are going down anyway .
Then ask Warnock to help in the selection/ recruitment of the next manager.
Maybe ask C. W. to help Neil in the firefighting .
Sure both would help with favourable terms for the Blades .
Action is required IMMEDIATELY, I E. TODAY.
    Please not Big Sam.

Can’t see the owner paying up heckingbottom and then trying to recruit someone without promises of money. This team will just about avoid relegation to league one and with 2 years of parachute money to come, he’ll be happy with that.

The Penniless Prince and his mate Bettis have thrown Hecky under the bus and although he’s got a lot wrong(selection/substitutions) he’s been given peanuts to produce a side to compete in a league where some teams have one player worth the same as the whole of our squad!! Is bringing Wilder back the answer, I think not ,as he would be in the same boat as Hecky come January with no money to strengthen the team also what decent player would want to sign for a sinking ship?
Having followed the Blades since I was 5( I’m 74 now) and travelling to each home game from my home in Norfolk I think the fans deserve much better. Once a Blade always a Blade, we were the pride of Yorkshire but not anymore!!

    hassenhuttl or Eustace for me

Prince Abdullah has previously stated that the most expensive thing an owner can do is replace the manager. I suspect he’ll sack Heckingbottom but leave Stuart McCall in charge- a man who couldn’t even manage Bradford in the lower leagues.

  • Brian Elliott says:

I think they need a x player so Wilder is the man for me , but it may be to late for united as a team…

Wilder has now been appointed. I agree with your comments and think the same. I don’t believe that even Pep can do anything with this side. CW might be able to motivate them but do they have the quality. Personally, I think not. We might be able to attract some decent players in January IF the Prince can/will put his hands in his pocket. Remember Souter left Stoke last January for Leicester and was a Championship player again within a few months – though they are a totally different side. I think we’re preparing for a promotion charge next season.
