Ahead of the new League One campaign manager Nigel Clough has said he’s very happy with the options we have between the sticks.

Having allowed George Long to go out on loan for games last month, it leaves George Willis as the No 2 to Mark Howard, but speaking to the Official Site Clough explained that he was perfectly happy with this because he knows the former Arsenal youngster Howard will motivate himself to his best levels without a more established competition.

‘There is a school of thought that goalkeepers need to have competition to get the best out of them but that doesn’t seem to be the case with Mark in pre season. He impressed against Fenerbahce and made a couple of fine saves at York, despite knowing he is already the undisputed number 1 following George’s loan to Oxford.’

Clough goes on to say that with Willis as back up, it’s the perfect chance for him to develop more as he trains with Howard and obviously there’ll be things he can learn in terms of preparation from knowing he’s on the bench that will be useful to him as well.
