Sheffield United have confirmed the signing of Michael Higdon.

Higdon becomes the latest addition as Nigel Clough looks to ensure that this squad is capable of challenging for promotion back into the championship, with that very much what the club will be expecting this season….

30-year-old Higdon moved into Dutch football with NEC Nijmegen last summer, joining the topflight side from Motherwell after an impressive 2012/13 season with 27-goals earning him the PFA Scottish Player of the Year award.

14-goals last season couldn’t prevent NEC from being relegated with him signing for us on a two-year deal for an undisclosed amount.

On his signing Clough told the official website: ‘He scores different types of goals, he uses his left, right and head and we think the crowd will take to him.

‘If you look at the quality of crosses we’ve put in over the pre-season period, it should be of major benefit to Michael.

‘He’s 30 years old, experienced and began at Crewe so is technically sound. Michael will be a major asset to us.’

Definitely not coming to Bramall Lane though is teenager Derby County striker Mason Bennett.

Steve McClaren, the Derby boss, has made it perfectly clear that he is ‘unhappy with the way Sheffield United handled Kieron Freeman’s proposed transfer’, which fell through last week.

Freeman was meant to join on a permanent basis but this and the Bennett loan deal, perhaps due to Higdon signing, didn’t come off and the Bennett deal is ‘dead’ with the Blades no longer an option for a loan move.

Freeman’s arrivals isn’t being completely ruled out though….
