Manager Nigel Clough was delighted to see us travel to Spotland last night and take a hard earned two one victory over Rochdale.

Goals from Marc McNulty and a first from John Brayford since his return to the club from Cardiff, set us on the way to victory with a two goal lead and although we couldn’t quite keep the clean sheet their goal was simply a consolation on the day.

With Bristol City, Preston and Swindon all winning elsewhere the three points were also important for our league placing.

Speaking to the Official Site following the match, a pleased gaffer explained.

‘It was a resolute and battling performance and it needed to be because two of our toughest games this season have come against Rochdale. They work tirelessly, they sprint all over the pitch, they close you down and stop you playing, but we scored two good goals, even if the second one was slightly fortunate. I thought we deserved our victory for the endeavour we showed.’

Clough goes on to credit the build up to the second goal.

‘The build up was pleasing and one of the times we managed to get the ball down and play. We generally have put too many shots over the top this season, so John’s shot just proves what can happen with these balls when you hit the target.’

Having described it as a hard earned win, Clough also went on to say that the spirit in the camp and the togetherness of the players was key to the result, because they had to keep plugging away to get the result we wanted at times during the game, and the pleasing thing for him is that spirit is really starting to shine through at just the right point of the campaign with 15 games remaining.

‘We have the will to win and the desire to succeed. If you show signs of weaknesses, teams like Rochdale will exploit that and again the importance of scoring first was emphasised, we then managed to double our advantage before having to work extremely hard to see the game through after they scored.’
