Sheffield United were back in Championship action earlier tonight as we welcomed Brentford to Bramall Lane.

With a four point gap separating the Blades from Leeds United and Norwich City ahead of them in the automatic spots in the second tier table, another positive result tonight would certainly put the pressure on.

It was a lively opening 45 minutes as Oliver Norwood gave us the lead from the penalty spot half way through the half, and nine minutes later in the 35th Gary Madine saw a straight red to put us down to ten men.

Despite the man disadvantage and Brentford’s eventual dominance of the game, we made our efforts count and David McGoldrick doubled our lead in the 84th minute. Keeping the clean sheet, it goes down as another solid 2-0 victory to keep us on the hunt for the automatic spots.

Speaking to the BBC following the fulltime whistle, manager Chris Wilder said of the tie.

“For us to produce a defensive performance like that is really heartening. Brentford are a really good team that move you around, so that result is right up there. We are showing signs that we have the characteristics to achieve something.”
