Blades – A Putt Above the Rest?

We’ve heard the analogies all season – ‘We didn’t get the rub of the green’ and ‘we were just below par’ so following this week’s Ryder Cup success, Vital Sheff Utd has a look at some of the Blades most notable players, in comparison with last week’s event at Celtic Manor.

Jean Calve – Rory McIlroy

Had a dream start did the full-back with a goal at Preston, and has showed signs of brilliance ever since. Slightly flawed defensively sometimes, but if he continues on the same path, there’s a lot to come from this player.

Stephen Jordan – Stewart Cink

A good solid player, you know what you’re going to get from Jordan. After a stop/start couple of years, he’s hit a purple patch recently, but most will remember him for the error that cost his side the points at Leeds United.

Johannes Ertl – Ross Fisher

He’s been around a few years has Ertl and some questioned if he would make the grade at Bramall Lane. Yet he’s proved the critics wrong, and in his role as a conventional central midfielder we’re seeing a more flamboyant side to the big man.

Mark Yeates – Miguel Angel Jimenez

Minus the cigar of course, Yeates shares the same fire on the pitch as Jimenez on the golf course. Sat out the opening fixtures, but playing a much more significant role now, Yeates provides the side with pace and trickery, despite often failing at the last.

Nick Montgomery – Padraig Harrington

Whilst often receving the criticism himself, what Montgomery provides for the rest of his team is often invaluable. Reading play, like the Irishman can read a green, Montgomery continues to be an integral part of the Blades side, captaining the team in Chris Morgan’s absence.

Ched Evans – Phil Mickleson

Promised so much early on, but as yet delivered little. However, Evans is still one of only three players to score a goal for United this season. It looked like he could take this side by the scruff of the neck, but as yet has failed to do so. However, a goal for a point at Cardiff, and the winner against Portsmouth does mean he’s earned valuable points this season.

Leon Britton – Rickie Fowler

In his debut season as a Sheffield United player, Britton has shown glimpses of the brilliance spoken about when he was signed. Despite struggling in a losing team, there could be big things to come from the little man.

Richard Cresswell – Lee Westwood

He’s not the most glamorous, but he continues to lead from the front. His goals this season have gone some way to keeping United out of the relegation zone, and despite having his flaws, Cresswell continues to be a significant member of Gary Speed’s squad, and deservedly so.

Finally Chris Morgan – Bubba Watson

For the simple reasons that not only is he not technically perfect… but if he makes contact properly the ball or the man is going to travel roughly 350 yards.
