After opening his account for the season last Saturday, Paul Heckingbottom has told Billy Sharp that he wants the seasoned striker to extend his contract with the Blades at the end of the season.

Iliman Ndiaye and Billy Sharp linked up on Saturday to secure a victory for the Blades over bottom of the league Huddersfield Town.

Sharp turns 37 in February, and the veteran centre-forward is set to be out of contract next summer. Sharp has gone on record saying that he hopes to end his career with the Blades, and he’s also stated that he has no plans of retiring after this season.

Paul Heckingbottom insisted:

“I want him, Billy, to play on. I encourage him to play on, for as long as he possibly can.” [The Star]

Sharp became the most prolific marksman in Championship history when he was on target against Peterborough 11 months ago. His exquisite left-footed finish against Huddersfield Town last weekend saw him reach a remarkable record: scoring in 19 consecutive seasons.

The Sheffield United and EFL legend has had to be patient when it comes to starts this season. Last Saturday was Sharp’s 6th Championship start of the season, as a result of the sensational performances from striker duo Iliman Ndiaye and Oli McBurnie.

Sharp took advantage of an opportunity after Oli McBurnie was declared not fit enough to start. But with the Blades having an extended rest before they play their next game against Wigan Athletic, McBurnie could be closer to 100% fitness, which would give Heckingbottom a selection dilemma at the top of the pitch.
