Adkins On Shrewsbury Win

Manager Nigel Adkins was obviously a pleased man following Sheffield United’s victory over Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday evening.

Making the trip to the Greenhous Meadow to face off against Micky Mellon’s Shrewsbury side, United took a two one victory on the day with goals coming from Billy Sharp and Che Adams.

Sharp found the net for the second consecutive game as well.

Speaking to the Official Site in his post game press interviews, he also had to credit George Long for his penalty save prior to Sharp finding the net, as he knows it could’ve gone differently for the side had that gone in.

‘It was an excellent win away from home. It was always going to be a tough fixture and a competitive game because Shrewsbury are fighting for their lives. Shrewsbury put us under pressure, they threw a lot of balls into the box but we showed terrific character and desire to come through the game and get all three points. Credit to the players for the resilience and grit they demonstrated having conceded, we were resolute, we regrouped and went on to score a deserved winner. Billy and Che get on the scoresheet, but equally as important, especially because of the timing was the penalty save from George, because that would have given them a massive lift.’

With United now four points from the top six and the Play Off spot with only three matches remaining, the hope of sneaking in remains live at least for now, but for Adkins it’s just about looking forward to the Yorkshire derby against fellow Play Off hopefuls Barnsley, and then seeing where we sit as obviously that game is key to us extending our season now.

‘We have done what we had to do, we have won the game, what happens elsewhere is beyond our control and all we are focusing on is the next game and that’s against Barnsley on Saturday. It promises to be a cracking game; it’s another local derby and another chance for us to pick up points. It will be a good atmosphere with plenty to play for and I am sure our supporters will be right behind the lads again.’
