The Yorkshire Post ran a piece yesterday stating that Sheffield United had an interest in Southampton Academy graduate Sam Gallagher.

The outlet reported that club officials had already made contact with our counterparts at St Mary’s Stadium over doing a deal for the 22-year-old but it seems their manager Mark Hughes may be waiting on news about the future of Liverpool striker Danny Ings before he makes a decision on whether he’ll let the youngster go or not.

Certainly in terms of whether he leaves on loan again in 2018/19 or moves on a permanent basis. The paper doesn’t state exactly what our interest is in the striker, it just loosely references the fact we’ve taken a big cash injection from Bournemouth following the sale of David Brooks.

Gallagher has scored two goals in 20 appearances for Southampton and he’s been learning his trade in loan spells the last few years. 2016/17 saw him with Blackburn Rovers for the campaign and he scored 12 times in 47 appearances and last season he was back in the Championship with Birmingham City, returning seven goals in 34 games.

He probably won’t be too familiar to Blades fans as he was an 89th-minute substitute when we faced them at Bramall Lane last year, and he was an 86th-minute substitute in the return leg at St Andrew’s Stadium.

Some may recall that both spells in the Championship saw him earn some good reviews though so he’d certainly be a decent addition to our group I would think.
