Of his new signing, Speed said ‘Jean impressed me when he played for us against Notts County earlier this summer. Since Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker left, we’ve always been asking people to fill-in at right-back.

‘Jean is very comfortable on the ball and he uses possession well. He provides us with a threat going forward from that position, which is something that I’d like us to do, but, first and foremost, he is also a good solid defender who can get close to his opponent.

‘Because of those qualities Jean should give us another dimension.’

Twenty six year old Calve is a specialist right back, six foot tall, and arrives via AS Nancy; his previous clubs were FC Sochaux-Montbeliard and Le Mans for whom he played in seasons 2006-08 making 46 appearances. From there he moved to his present club, going out on loan to Lorient and Grenoble last season.

A graduate of the FFA Academy he has also represented France at junior level.

Calve accompanied The Blades team to Middlesborough on Sunday before completing his medical yesterday at Shirecliffe. He could be in line to make his debut on Saturday at Bramall Lane against PNE.

Of his move to Bramall Lane, Calve said ” I am very happy to be here, and proud to be the managers first signing. It has taken longer than I would have hoped to finalise, but I am looking forward to a new challenge. I know enough English to get by on the pitch at the moment but I want to learn more”
