Sheffield United’s sparse frontline could be boosted with the return of Jamie Ward this weekend, but it’s still touch and go whether the former Chesterfield man will make it.

Ward, who has been missing in recent weeks is still a doubt, and under regular circumstances would be unlikely to feature, but with both Richard Cresswell and former red Daniel Bogdanovic injured, the winger could be brought back into the action.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Speed said:

‘I think it might be a little bit too early for Jamie. There’s always a chance and you never know but I reckon he might have to wait.

‘He’s been getting treatment so we’ll see how he responds. Obviously we’d rather he was available. But, even though we are well down in terms of numbers in that department, we can’t afford to take unnecessary risks.”

‘We’ll just have to see how it goes.’

A boost that the squad are expected to receive is the return of Mark Yeates, who has recovered from the back spasm that kept him out of last week’s defeat at Bristol City.
