Bradford, which is already highly probable anyway, will secure a top-six place – and could keep alive slim hopes of an automatic finish too with a victory over Wimbledon. The midtable Dons haven’t won in four – a point for City will definitely confirm this play-off spot.
Six without a win for Bury, 20th, means the Shakers are just two points above the relegation zone before the visit of Northampton to Gigg Lane. Northampton, League 2 champions last season – but also without a win in six – are already secured a place in League 1 next season.
Second-bottom Chesterfield had relegation confirmed over Easter – they are now battling with Coventry to avoid the bottom-placed finish, not that it make too much difference. Three without defeat – including two wins – has ensured Charlton aren’t going to join the Spireites in League 2.
Coventry could move off the bottom of the league if they avoid defeat against Walsall. However, the Sky Blues are going down to the bottom tier of professional football regardless.
Gillingham can’t drop into the bottom-four but would virtually secure their League 1 status with a win over promotion chasing Fleetwood. But the Cod Army, third, head to Priestfield knowing victory could take them above Bolton into the second automatic position.
Despite defeat last time round Millwall, sixth, managed to cling onto the fourth and final play-off place. If the Lions are beaten by Oxford – who can’t make it into the top-six – there’s a good chance they’ll drop out heading into the final game next weekend.
MK Dons become the latest side looking to end – already promoted and crowned champions – Sheffield United’s winning run. A sixth straight win at the stadium:mk and the Blades will go into the final game knowing another would take them to 100 points for the season.
If Oldham can bounce back from a defeat last time round the Latics could be all but mathematically certain of avoiding the drop. However, Rochdale head to Boundary Park knowing they have to win in order to take their bid for a top-six finish to the final day.
The season can’t end soon enough for Peterborough now with Posh set to take stock an go again next term. A Bristol Rovers win would take them into the final game with a chance of finishing in the top-six? if Millwall, Southend and Rochdale all fail to win.
Port Vale will have a game in hand but still need to end a four game losing run if they’re to climb out of the relegation zone. Bolton, second, are without a win in three but could lose the second automatic spot if they are beaten for a third time in four.
The superior goal difference would see Shrewsbury stay out of the bottom-four regardless but the Shrews would sooner extend their three game unbeaten run to keep survival in their own hand from a visit of promotion chasing Southend. The Shrimpers, seventh, will definitely take a top-six bid to their final game of the season with a victory at Greenhous Meadow.
Swindon could be relegated if beaten by promotion chasing Scunthorpe. The Robins need the points really or they could be left with too much to do on the final game with the Iron knowing a fourth straight win might be enough to take their top-two hopes into the final day?
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
