Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has become a target for Sunderland, reports Sky Sports.

Having failed to agree a deal with Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes, who opted against taking the job at the Stadium of Light to remain at the Scottish Premiership club, Sunderland are now considering an approach for Wilder.

These Sky Sports reports say Wilder was recommended to Crystal Palace chairman Steven Parish as his replacement when the former England boss Sam Allardyce stepped down at Selhurst Park last month – the recommendation wasn’t taken up, fortunately.

Arriving from Northampton last summer, after he had guided the Cobblers to the League Two title, Wilder, 49, steered United to 30 wins from 46 League One games as the Blades collected 100 points on the way to the championship and a return to the Championship this season.

Wilder’s affinity with United, coupled with the forward moving momentum and stability at Bramall Lane, should keep him in Yorkshire but you can never say never in football.
