Sheffield United boss Danny Wilson says the win at Tranmere Rovers was a huge result.
Having slipped down the League One table in recent weeks having not played for almost two weeks, United beat promotion rivals Tranmere Rovers 1-0 at Prenton Park and Wilson says it was important to keep on the heels of those sides chasing automatic promotion. Speaking after the game, Wilson said, ‘It’s a massive three points.
‘Away from home and against one of your nearest rivals, you want to get a big result and that certainly was, as was the performance.
‘It’s a huge result for us as it was important to stay on the shirt tails of the teams around us, and we’ve done that.’
United won the game thanks to an own goal just before half time, Ash Taylor slicing the ball into his own net following a free kick from Tony McMahon.
The Blades looked the more likely to score in the first half with Jonathan Forte causing problems for the Tranmere defence.
George Long in the United goal was rarely threatened and as the game went on, United looked more likely to stretch their lead.
Owain Fon Williams in the Tranmere goal twice denied Barry Robson and Ryan Flynn saw an effort come back off the bar in the final quarter of the game.
The win for United sets them up nicely for the final month of the season.
United face eight games in the final month, starting with a home clash against Carlisle United on Monday. Their destiny is now back in their own hands as Doncaster fell to a 1-0 defeat at Coventry.
Despite being fourth in the table, United have two games in hand and they trail their Yorkshire neighbours by four points.
