The first ever meeting came almost 120 years ago when United won 4-0 in a Second Division clash in the 1892/93 season.
It was then 89 years before they met again when United once again won, 3-2 in a Fourth Division clash. The win maintained their lead at the top of the Fourth Division with just three games remaining whilst Crewe were firmly rooted to the foot of the table.
It was almost 16 years to the day when they next met, this time Crewe winning 2-1.
Since then, there paths have crossed more frequently with United winning on their last three visits.
