Sheffield United manager Gary Speed believes Saturday’s fightback against high-flying Burnley could be a turning point in the Blades’ season, but insists he was frustrated with the way his side conceded.

After seeing his side come back from 2-0 down, Speed’s men conceded in the 90th minute, with what could have been the winning goal of the game.

‘I was very frustrated and annoyed with the players, especially having fought back from two goals down because they conceded again and almost threw it away.

‘It was a lack of intelligence, naivety – call it what you want – and I told them. They got carried away, were urged on by the crowd and went gung ho for a win. When you do what they did to get back on terms they should, first and foremost, have made sure they couldn’t lose.’

However, United’s poor defending could have led to worse, but they salvaged a point thanks to Mark Yeates’ strike deep into injury time.

‘My frustration and anger turned to pride at the way they came back because it showed not only that they can score goals, but also that they have fighting spirit and character – but that was never in doubt for me.’

‘Overall I have mixed feelings about how we played but I have told the lads that I think this could be a turning-point for them because of the way they came back and because they have scored goals.’
