Sheffield United’s place in the second round of the FA Cup was secured on Tuesday night with a replay win over Crewe Alexandra.

After the goalless original tie this went into a replay at Bramall Lane with a goal in each half securing us a 2-0 win.

Crewe had threatened to take the lead but ‘keeper Mark Howard produced a great save to keep out George Cooper with him them able to somehow recover to save the follow-up from Callum Saunders too.

That sparked us into life with a short-corner routine giving Ryan Flynn (19) the chance to put us ahead.

Crewe, who were by then being outplayed by us, almost drew level through Brad Inman but his effort rolled along the face of the goal having hit the post as we went into the break one-nil up.

If it hadn’t have been for Crewe ‘keeper Ben Garratt we would have wrapped this game up sooner than we did, he tipped over Chris Basham’s effort from distance before doing likewise from a Stefan Scougall header.

The two-nil win was secured with a little under 15-minutes to play though when Flynn (77) ran clear to score again and book our second round meeting with Plymouth Argyle.
