Manager Nigel Clough was delighted with the response of the players as we put Crewe Alexandra to the sword at the second time of asking in the FA Cup last night.

United progressed through to the second round of the Cup with a two nil victory courtesy of a brace from Ryan Flynn who scored in each half.

Speaking to the Official Site a very happy Clough explained.

‘I thought we played well again, controlled the game and looked in command. But you always have that little worry at the back of your mind about Crewe hitting you on the break and they had two good chances in the first half. Mark Howard makes a fantastic double save at 0-0, then they hit the inside of the post just after we have gone in front, but apart from that I don’t think we were really troubled.’

The gaffer goes on to say that with Howard not being called on to make ‘save after save’ in the game, it shows how untroubled we were but also importantly what a good keeper he is as he remains focused to react as and when needed and he again repeats his belief that he’s one of the best goalkeeper’s in the division.

‘We were bright going forward at times, but again we just didn’t apply the finishing touch to some of our moves.’

As for match winner Flynn, Clough goes on to say that he was delighted he got the goals, especially given the ‘manner’ of them so he couldn’t have been more delighted at full time.
