The Blades grabbed their first three points of the Championship season in an entertaining game at Bramall Lane yesterday.

A well placed header from James Beattie in the first half was enough for Bryan Robson to earn a win against his old club.

The Blades started brightly but it was West Brom who should have been in front after 10 minutes when Craig Beattie saw his free header bounce off the floor and onto the bar before Kenny punched clear.

James Beattie replied for the Blades but saw his effort fly well over the bar from the edge of the area.

The home side managed to test Kiely on 25 minutes when Armstrong turned his man on the edge of the area and sent a powerful strike at goal, but the West Brom keeper palmed the effort away.

The Blades had a penalty waved away when Bromby appeared to be pushed in the box, and from the resulting cross BEATTIE directed his header past Kiely and into the far corner.

United started the second half on the attack and forced a couple of corners before Gillespie saw his half volley blocked when it seemed destined for the top corner.

The next 20 minutes or so saw both teams create half chances but it was not till the 80 minute mark that a clear cut opportunity was created.

Tonge found the ball at his feet on the edge of the area and sent a sweetly struck volley inches wide of the left post.

The final minutes of the game were Kenny’s busiest as he palmed away a shot from Teixeira before again saving from Hoefken’s close range header.

The Blades could have finished the game off in the final minutes but Beattie saw his low shot saved by Kiely’s legs, after good work from Geary down the wing.

The final whistle was met by a loud cheer from the stands as Robson enjoyed his first three points in charge.

It was a much improved, if not great, performance from United as they now slowly seem to be settling into life back in the Championship.
