Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny could see his nine month ban reduced on appeal.

The Blades goalkeeper was handed the lengthy ban on Monday after failing a sample in May for the banned substance ephidrene, which he claims to have only taken as part of a cough medicine.

The verdict took into account that it wasn’t taken with the intention of enhancing performance but still gave him a complete football ban, which doesn’t allow him to train with a team.

It appears now however, that United are set to have the suspension shortened. Kenny’s law firm have released this statement today:

One of the bases of mitigation is that it did not find its way into his system to enhance performance.

‘Paddy was having trouble with his chest and took a remedy which his partner had previously used and had worked.

‘The commission accepted he did not know what he was taking. The words of their response, however, make it quite clear they are looking to send a message to others.

‘Paddy Kenny is an honest guy, and we have a legal system of proportionality. Nine months seems excessive.’
