All the more reason to let him stay here.

That seemed to be the message that former Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel seemed to be sending when talking about the battle for the number one spot at Old Trafford between David De Gea and Dean Henderson.

Speaking to The Metro, Schmeichel spoke about Henderson’s future and how staying at Bramall Lane might be better for him in the long-run than sitting on the bench for Manchester United, and how it might still be a while before the 23-year-old is in a position to properly take the Spaniard’s place between the sticks:

“You have to have so much experience and I see no harm in Dean Henderson continuing playing for Sheffield United. Every day he will learn something new. He has to learn something new every day – that’s what the top players do. He will be playing, not sat on the bench. When or if the time comes [for Henderson to replace De Gea] then we’ll have to see. I know it sounds cold but we have David De Gea, who has been so fantastic for us. I don’t understand why anyone would think that’s a position that needs to change.”

Is Henderson the club's best ever goalkeeper?

Yes

Yes

No

No

It really is an intriguing argument that Schmeichel puts forward, insinuating that another year at Bramall Lane might not be enough for Henderson to be ready to make the step up to replace De Gea.

I have spoken before about the idea of us buying Henderson outright rather than getting him on loan again, something that former Blades boss Neil Warnock also suggests is a possibility, and what Schmeichel says hit me with an idea.

Would it be worth us buying Henderson this summer, knowing that Manchester United might come back in for him in the future and be willing to pay through the nose to get him, similar to what they did with Paul Pogba?

Let me know what you think, do you think that would be a good strategy to pull? Or should we be settling for loan moves for the time being when it comes to Henderson?
