Memories of Hull City away

Our last trip to Hull City was on January 3rd, 2006. The Blades had a large following that night and we were all very amused by the, more than a little camp, reading of the Tigers burning bright ‘poem’ pre-match.

Hull took the lead after 23 minutes through Jason Price, now of Doncaster Rovers. At the time it seemed like Hull were going to score from every set piece but the Blades held on and pulled level through a deflected strike by Paul Ifill. Ifill had a stinker that night and looked like he didn’t want the ball but he had a habit of scoring when not playing all that well.

We took the lead on the stroke of half-time through a controversial Danny Webber goal. He was played in by Unsworth following what the Hull fans thought was a foul on Price. Webber ran at Leon Cort, turned him inside out and then opened his body up for his trademark sidefooted curler inside the far post.

Chris Armstrong made the game safe shortly after half time with a lovely finish. The packed away end sang ‘The Blades are going up’ with real conviction for the first time that season. Nothing brings a smile to the face and a glow in the heart like that song, I commented at the time that it was like being part of a 3,500 strong gospel choir and that was how it felt.

Another 3-1 victory wouldn’t bring out a chorus of our promotion anthem but it would bring back a lot of belief that this season might end well after all.
