Peter Bankes will take charge of the match between Manchester United and Sheffield United at Old Trafford tomorrow night (kick-off: 20:15), having already officiated a Blades Premier League match this season.

Bankes was the referee in charge of the Blades 1-1 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion on 20th December and was responsible for dismissing John Lundstram in that game. He has been in charge of thirteen Sheffield United matches throughout his career and has booked 38 players (average 2.9 per game), and brandished three red cards but only once to a Blades player.

This season he has taken charge fifteen matches in Championship, Carabao Cup, Premier League, and FA Cup. He has dished out 47 yellow cards (average 3.1 per game) and waived three red cards. One of which was to Lundstram.

His first match in charge of a Sheffield United fixture was at Gresty Road in October 2014. The Blades beat Crewe by a single goal and he also brandished a red card during that game, to George Ray. He also sent-off Wolves captain Conor Coady when the Blades won 2-0, upon their return to the Championship, days after beating Sheffield Wednesday 4-2 in the so-called; ‘Bouncing Day Massacre.’

In September 2018 he booked twelve players during the Championship match between Brentford and Nottingham Forest, bizarrely, nobody was sent-off! Later in the season he officiated the Steel City Derby at Hillsborough, which ended scoreless, and saw no reason to book any players.

Last season, Bankes took charge of the home fixture with Aston Villa. John fleck scored twice in a two-goal win but was involved in the VAR decision that awarded Villa a penalty, which Jack Grealish struck against the crossbar.
