The Blades made it four wins out of four from their pre-season fixtures, although they were made to work for their victory on Tuesday night.

A 14th minute header from new signing Billy Sharp was enough to give United victory at Flancare Park, in front of a crowd of around 1,600, three times Longford’s average league attendance.

Sharp started the game brightly and saw an early effort curl well wide of the target before he grabbed what proved to be the winning goal.

A perfect cross from Gillespie found SHARP unmarked in the box and the striker sent a flicked header beyond Kelly and into the corner of the net.

Chances were aplenty for both sides before the break but wayward shooting and good goalkeeping kept the scoreline at 1-0.

Longford almost equalised at the start of the second half but a shot from striker Moodey hit the underside of the bar and Lucketti managed to block the rebound effort.

The remainder of the game saw Longford create the better chances but the Blades held on to record their fourth straight win, albeit hardly convincingly.
