Sheffield United winger Glen Little rolled back the years this afternoon with an inspired performance that inspired the Blades to a 1-0 victory over Coventry City.

Little, 34, comes to the end of a one year deal in the summer, but could have played his way into Kevin Blackwell’s plans for 2011.

It was his assist which set-up Richard Cresswell’s striker after half-time, and he exited to a standing ovation when he was substituted late in the game.

The veteran winger returned to the team along with Paul Connolly, the duo replacing Lee Williamson and Marcel Seip.

He was on the end of the Blades first chance of the game, as Cresswell was tackled and the loose ball was side footed against Leon Barnett by Little, before he won the ball back and was prevented again by a last-ditch tackle.

Andy Taylor’s shot from distance was comfortbale for goalkeeper Kieran Westwood, and Stephen Quinn, on his 150th appearance fired wide from the edge of the area as the Blades continued to push without showing any real prowess.

The final chance of the half fell to Darius Henderson, who should really have done better. Little again winning possession out wide, and laying off to Quinn who found Henderson with a perfect cross, and the unmarked forward headed at Barnett on the line, before firing wide from four yards on the rebound.

Less than a minute after half-time Cresswell picked up the ball out wide and played in Little who returned the ball, and the former Stoke man opened his foot to beat Westwood at the near post.

Little almost got the goal he deserved as he broke into the right hand side of the area and tried the kind of delicated chip Lionel Messi would have been proud of, but much to his disappointment, the ball just floated over the crossbar.

Coventry pressed as the game entered the final ten minutes, but were unable to force an equaliser, despite a free-kick inside the area following Simonsen picking up Harper’s backpass.

An encouraging display by the Blades who played some of the finest football they’ve mustered all season. A settled team, an injection of pace, a better partner for either Henderson or Cresswell (they can’t play together) and options on the bench, next season might not be a right off just yet.
