Left-wingback conundrum for the Blades

Will United be faced with a left side conundrum for the early part of the season?

The left side of the defence for United is shaping up quite nicely in terms of depth, now the trouble for Hecky and his coaching staff is going to be who he starts in those positions.

With the return of Max Lowe after a good loan spell at Forest, despite injury, there is a trio of players battling it out for the left-wingback spot. Enda Stevens’ experience and well-roundedness could make him a favourable choice, however Rhys Norrington-Davies gives the side an injection of energy, whereas Max Lowe is seen as the most technical of the three.

Rhys Norrington-Davies did start at left-sided centre-back against Casa Pia in the Blades first friendly of the summer, although he did come off halfway through the first half as he was ill all week, and it carried through into the game.

Norrington-Davies could potentially be in competition for the left side of the back three, but United are said to be closing in on signing Ciaran Clark to compete with Jack Robinson.

If the Clark move does get confirmed then where does that leave Norrington-Davies, or even Enda Stevens for that matter?

I think Max Lowe will be the first choice left-wingback if fit, or unless United sell him this summer. I do think United are making it clear that’s the case as well, with starting him in the first half against Casa Pia, as well as interviewing him after the game.

Up to now, it does look like Stevens or Norrington-Davies are going to be seeing limited minutes as we progress towards/into the season.
