Sheffield United defender Matthew Kilgallon has expressed his delight at the return to form of the Blades defence, following their clean sheet against free-scoring Nottingham Forest last night.

The Blades have gone through an indifferent spell in recent weeks with goals being leaked at an alarming level, but two clean sheets in a row have impressed the former Leeds man.

‘We have been conceding far too many goals and last season we prided ourselves on not giving anything away.

‘We knew it would be a tough game against Forest who came here full of confidence after thrashing Leicester at the weekend.

‘They have been scoring for fun and Earnshaw has been on fire, so it is pleasing that we stood firm and, arguably, we should have won.’

Coincidentally, the return to the side of Andy Taylor, meant Kevin Blackwell could almost call on his first choice defensive line, the one that began the game against Middlesborough, with only Gary Naysmith likely to come back into the team, injuries aside.

It’s certainly a positive for the Blades, keeping three clean sheets in the last four games, and with Neil Warnock’s Crystal Palace visiting this Saturday, Kilgallon knows that they could have a busy time, considering the talent Palace possess in the young Victor Moses and November player of the month Darren Ambrose.

‘It will be a tricky game against Palace, who enjoyed a good win at Reading, but if we get all three points then we put ourselves right back in the mix before Christmas.

‘Christmas is about business, not holiday, for us, and we always seem to do well during those hectic few weeks.’
