Olly has dug up some information on ex-player John Gannon.

John Gannon signed for Sheffield United in 1989, having started his career at Wimbledon in 1984. He was part of the ‘crazy gang’ squad that went on to beat Liverpool 1-0 in the 1988 FA Cup Final, although he wasn’t part of the Final squad team.

He had a spell with Crewe Alexandra, and came to us on loan in 1989 before being signed on a free transfer by Dave Bassett.

He was part of the Blades squad that gained two promotions and was a regular first team player. He made 174 appearances for us, scoring six times in his time at the Lane. He featured the 1993 Steel City FA Cup clash against Wednesday at Wembley, where United lost out 2-1.

He went out loan to Middlesbrough, where he made seven appearances, and hung his boots up in 1997 having six outings for Oldham Athletic.

He’s now working as a scout with Manchester City, and has enjoyed being part of the coaching team at Mansfield Town, Chester City, Notts County and Leeds United.
