Tom Rogic is deemed as a modern day Celtic legend, winning 15 trophies in the iconic green and white hoops. His career would have looked totally different if Sheffield United took up their chance to buy him in 2013 from (at the time) sister club from Australian side Central Coast Mariners.

Gordon Young acted as Sheffield United’s international academy manager from 2013-2015. Young sat down and spoke about how Sheffield United should’ve signed Tom Rogic, on the 10th episode of the Lanarkshire Live Sports Podcast.

As we are all aware, Sheffield United’s previous owner, Kevin McCabe, had shares in clubs in China, Hungary, India and Belgium. He also had shares in the Australian team Central Coast Mariners.

Young told the Podcast host:

“They had this group of clubs they would use to Talent ID players and filter them through the levels.” [Via Daily Record]

The former international academy manager of the Blades further added:

“Tom Rogic was one of them but we missed out because of a discrepancy over a shares issue. We could have – and should have – signed him.

“I can’t put my finger on it but it was something on the ownership side of it. Sheffield United had the first pick on anybody and never took it up.” [Via Daily Record]
