Sheffield United was heading for a point on the road at Coventry City on Wednesday night until a late penalty kick gave Mark Robins side the lead with 4 minutes to play.
A clumsy challenge from Chris Basham resulted in a penalty, which was put away by Martyn Waghorn to make it a 1-0 win for the Sky Blues. The win lifted Coventry City off of the foot of the table. The Blades are now without a victory in five games, since the restart of the league after the international break.
Paul Heckingbottom was questioned about his lack of substitutions during last night’s 1-0 defeat. He told SUTV:
“We were looking at making a change but I thought we were on top and I thought him and Iliman were causing problems. We were talking about it from 75 mins on but they’d have an effort or a run.”
The Blades defended much better than they have in recent games, however, the experienced centre-back Chris Basham lunged in needlessly on Gyokeres in the area, in the 86th minute. Ultimately that spelt United’s demise as they travelled back up to the steel city with zero points in the bag.
Despite the loss, Paul Heckingbottom was pleased with the way Sheffield United defended in last night’s match:
“One thing Coventry do in every game is leave 3 men, 2 men up the pitch and all their chances are that. For them to have 1 shot on target besides the penalty, our locking out of the back 3 and 1 midfielder or wingback was excellent. Excellent”, he explained to SUTV.
Sheffield United host their promotion-chasing rivals Norwich City at Bramall Lane on Saturday. Both sides enter the game in poor form; United have collected two points out of their last five games, meanwhile, Norwich have accumulated four points over five games – losing their last three games.
