Ahmed Fathi, Sheffield United’s new £700,000 Egyptian signing, is sure to have turned a few heads with his display for his country on Wednesday night.

Fathi not only put in an encouraging performance for Egypt in their friendly against Sweden, but actually scored one of the goals in the 2-0 win.

In front of a crowd of 65,000, Fathi struck a sweet left foot strike from the edge of the area on 87 minutes to seal Egypt’s impressive win.

Blades coach Mick Jones was among the crowd and sent a positive report back to Neil Warnock on Fathi’s progress.

‘Mick’s told me Ahmed was the best player on the pitch’ Warnock told the Sheffield Star.

‘We wanted to check on how he did, on his energy levels and they were all excellent apparently.’

Meanwhile, Keith Gillespie featured in N. Ireland’s 0-0 draw with Wales on Tuesday, but Stephen and Alan Quinn were unused substitutes in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-1 qualifying win against San Marino.
