Loan targets can be secured, insists Blades ‘keeper Steve Simonsen, who believes that Bramall Lane would be an ideal destination for some of the Premier League’s fringe players to get some game time.

‘This is a Premier League club without a shadow of a doubt. It’s up to us to make sure that we get out of this division as quickly as possible.

‘If you look at the stadium, the stature and the crowd then it definitely is in the top flight, which is why I think a lot of people would be glad to come here. If you were with a top-flight club and you weren’t getting a game then you would look at us and think ‘I fancy going there. I’ve got a chance to be a part of something because they’ve got ambitions to go up’.

However, it’s not only the players who could see Gary Speed’s men as a possibility, but also top flight managers who are looking for their youngsters to gain first-team experience; something which has proved successful in the past, with Henri Lansbury and Tom Cleverley both excelling at Watford last season.

‘Likewise if you were a top-flight manager looking to give a youngster some experience and further their development then there’s no better place than this because there’s an expectation level and a pressure associated with representing Sheffield United.

‘Being in that type of environment would, with all due respect, be much better for their development than going somewhere that gets gates of a couple of thousand and where the pressure isn’t really on.’
