Deserved Win For Clough

Manager Nigel Clough has said our two one victory over Preston North End was deserved in his mind.

Speaking to the Official Site after seeing us take a two goal second half lead with McNulty and Campbell-Ryce finding themselves on the scoresheet again, Preston scored a consolation right at the end, leaving the manager convinced we more than deserved all three points from the match.

‘It was a very good performance, we put so much effort and desire into the game, against a very good Preston side. Most teams would crumble going 2-0 down at Bramall Lane, but Preston upped their game and pushed us all the way in the end.’

Clough goes on to say that the players were ‘desperate’ for all three points having not won in recent league games and for him fans would’ve seen what it meant to the team given how they reacted to the second goal going in.

With the second half being ours in terms of scoring the goals, Clough adds that in the first period he didn’t feel there was much between the sides and we had a couple of chances he feels we should’ve made more of, so the half time message was to play with more ‘purpose and intent’ and thankfully in the second period we did just that and scored ‘two good goals’ to get ourselves clear and he knows that with other chances we had, we could’ve increased the margin as well pointing specifically to the chances that fell to Scougall and Doyle.

Moving on from the game and talking about 22 year old McNulty a bit more specifically, the gaffer also gave a different interview where he said he feels that fans are now starting to see the best of the youngster because he’s really played himself into some form of late.

‘It was a mature performance from Marc and you can certainly see a massive improvement in him from when he first arrived. He is working harder than he ever has done, he is looking fit and strong and holding the ball up. He is now resisting challenges from the defenders which enables him to bring our midfielders into play.’

Clough goes on to say that he and the coaching team have worked incredibly hard with him to improve his game and we are now seeing the rewards of that, but he feels he has a lot more still to do in terms of his development but the first thing for him to work on now is his consistency and then he could go on to be an even better player in the future.
